Health Careers program gives student head start on career!
Fort Supply Senior Katum Redfearn is enjoying being able to advance her future career choice with High Plains Technical Centers’ Health Career Program.
“I always knew I wanted to help people and go into the health careers path. My dad was the first person to introduce me to the possibility of being a pharmacist. I’ve discovered it is a great way to build connections with people in the community and is still directly affecting someone’s health.”
Redfearn started the program last year as a Junior. There she was taught health basics which included medical vocabulary, PPE, physician protocol and HIPAA compliance. Students are also informed of many different career paths within the health field during this time.
“There’s multiple days that we were taken on tours to help decide. One day we went to OSU’s health science building and people who work in health science spoke to us. The second year you pinpoint what certifications you want to have. I have workbooks and then clinicals in a pharmacy setting,” she said.
Redfearn went to SWOSU’s Pharmcorp on October 8, 2022. Coordinators invited students who were interested in going to the Pharmacy college at SWOSU. Facility tours and students participated in fun pharmacy related activities.
“I was able to talk with current students that are pursuing their doctorate in pharmacy and because I’m already pursuing my pharmacy tech certification here, I actually knew a lot of the stuff that others were talking about,” she continued.
